Heat-pump water heaters contain a compressor and fan, so sound can matter near bedrooms, offices, and living areas. This guide keeps each manufacturer statement in context and flags models whose reviewed official sources did not provide a numeric dBA figure.

Do not compare every dBA number as if it came from the same test. Sound pressure, sound power, distance, operating mode, test standard, and whether the compressor is indoors or outdoors can all change what a number means.

Four sound questions to settle before installation

  1. Which operating mode was measured? Hybrid, heat-pump-only, and high-demand modes may not sound the same.
  2. What metric and distance were used? Ask whether the number is sound pressure or sound power and where it was measured.
  3. Where will the compressor and fan sit? A split system with an outdoor heat-pump unit is not acoustically equivalent to an integrated indoor unit.
  4. Can vibration or airflow amplify it? Confirm the exact installation instructions, clearances, ducting rules, platform, and isolation approach with the installer.
