Should you choose a 40, 50, 65, or 80 gallon heat pump water heater?
Start with the hot water you need in the busiest hour—not the tank label alone. A larger tank can store more hot water and reduce backup-element use, but it also needs more physical space. First-hour rating, recovery, voltage, mode, dimensions, and the installation location all matter.

Smaller footprint
Often the first range shoppers compare when demand and space are modest. Verify first-hour rating carefully: two tanks with similar labels can deliver different amounts in the busiest hour.
Check: simultaneous showers, laundry or dishwasher overlap, recovery, and whether a gas replacement should be upsized.
65 gallon class
More stored-water margin
A middle capacity step that can reduce reliance on resistance backup when hot-water use clusters together, provided the taller or wider tank fits.
Check: exact listed storage, first-hour rating, height, diameter, clearance, and electrical configuration.
80 gallon class
Higher-capacity starting point
Provides more stored-water capacity for higher-demand situations, but it is not automatically the right choice and may require substantially more height and floor area.
Check: delivery access, ceiling height, diameter, weight, service clearance, and local installation cost.

Make the decision in four checks
- Estimate the busiest hour independently. Include overlapping showers and appliances rather than relying on household count alone.
- Compare first-hour rating. The current ENERGY STAR-listed FHR is the product metric to compare with that requirement.
- Check the recovery and mode context. Resistance backup can increase delivery but changes energy use; available modes and recovery evidence vary by exact model.
- Measure the installation. Confirm tank dimensions, room air, ambient temperature, service clearances, condensate, circuit, doorway access, and local code before ordering.
